Real Friends?

10 04 2008

This story was recounted to me by a older friend. Please understand that this story is non-fiction, and the moral is definently important.

When I was a young adult, I was struggling terribly with immorality. Seeking to live a life of purity, I asked a brother in my church for help. We talked about it, and he shared some of his own experiences. He was about my age—still struggling, but more experienced than I. I told him most of my deepest sins, including pornography and masturbation. I knew I could trust him, and besides, he was sharing the same things! The two of us decided to become accountability partners. Every week we got together and shared what happened to us during that 7-day period. Through this, we developed into something close to a friendship. I even came to the mindset that we were best friends. This way of friendship lasted several years.

We were having another one of our meetings one day. This time, however, we begin with a light and casual conversation. It was interesting to know a little bit about the other person, and we enjoyed the little stream of sentences. Then I realized, I really didn’t know about the guy in front of me. I never asked him questions like what his favorite hobbies are, and not even simple ones like what is his favorite color! I brought up the idea, and my friend revealed that he too was struck with the same thought. Now that we know what was wrong, we started to use this meeting as a way of getting “acquainted” with each other. Discussions about our past were brought up—general ones, not personal. I found that we are very different. He came from a middle-class family and more disciplined surroundings. I was brought up in a low-wage family, and I’ll admit I wasn’t as disciplined.

So now I ask you: do you know your friend? And I mean “surface” things, not deep personal stuff. This was one of my greatest lessons. I learned that knowing “surface” stuff is just as important as the deep ones. I hope that you and your accountability partner will understand what I’ve said. Don’t just talk about personal thoughts—get to know your friend’s hobbies, dreams, and favorite things. Both are important. I’ll say it again. Both types of conversation are important. May God bless your relationship with your friend or accountability partner.

Help!

9 02 2008

Do you wake up every morning with a resolution to stop doing certain things? If you do, and get discouraged every night, look to Paul. He looks perfect but in truth, he says he is just like us. The bible says no one is perfect for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.(Rom. 3:23) Then, why doesn’t God just take away our sins? Why can’t we just be good? If he does, then we wouldn’t need God’s grace. Paul tells us that Christ saves us from ourselves. IN chapter 8, he tells us how to make peace with our weaknesses. We cannot be perfect. Sin lives in us. But Christ lives in us too! Remember that Jesus will not account your sins against you.
